ON THE BOARDS

LOFT WITH A TWIST

On an urban lot in an established neighborhood, this new house respects the scale of its surroundings while offering its owners a modern exterior image coupled with an interior inspired by the rustic functionality of agricultural and industrial buildings of the past. It is an “upside-down house” with living spaces located above the bedrooms; but unlike most such designs which are intended give their second floor living area a distant view, this house is designed so that living, dining, kitchen, office and art studio functions can all take place within a single, high-ceilinged, open-planned space under one great roof.

The wood structure of the second floor space is exposed to the interior. Air conditioning and heating are accomplished by means of ductwork below the floor. The first floor is designed to be clean and modern, with more refined finishes.
