The clients’ wishes include an expanded kitchen designed for entertaining as well as enjoyment of cooking every day, a strong positive relationship between the house and the back yard, and a new master suite. Although the proposed addition will almost double the floor area of their existing house, they want the addition to provide an integrated, seamless transition between original and new construction. Local historic district requirements call for the design of the addition to strike a fine balance, harmonizing with the original house and its neighbors while remaining distinct enough from the original house to facilitate potential restoration efforts in the future.
